As for Me and My House, We Will Serve The Lord

This is the Day that the Lord Has Made, And We Will Be Glad and Rejoice In It!

Purim-- Should Christians Celebrate This Holiday?

In the Christian Community there is freedom to celebrate it, or to not celebrate it.  This is not a feast day that God commands that we remember.  However, let me give you a few reasons why you may enjoy celebrating it.

Purim takes place in this month and is a holiday celebrating release from the enemies of God's people.  It can also be a time to fast for a day and let God uncover any secret plots against you.  The Purim fast begins at dawn and ends after nightfall on the 25th of February.  You can fast TV, or food, or whatever the Lord leads you to fast.

Wouldn't you like a release from your enemies and for God to uncover any secret plots against you or your family?  We know that God is always ready to do that for His children, but as we celebrate His doing so at a particular time and way in history (Purim) it helps us stop our busy lives to relate to Him and let Him know we are    grateful for the ways and times He has worked in the past.

The celebration of Purim is traditionally done by reading the book of Ester, giving of presents to the poor and our friends, and enjoying  a really nice meal.  For two weeks ahead of Purim you try to be joyful and happy each day.

Purim in 2010 will start on Sunday, the 28th of February and will continue for 2 days until Monday, the 1st of March.

Note that on the Jewish calendar, a holiday begins the sunset of the previous day, so observing Jews will celebrate Purim on the sunset of Saturday the 27th to the Sunset of Monday, March 1st.  Sunday would be the day of feasting and gladness, while the 27th would be the day they prevailed over their enemies.

The bible says this holiday is celebrated on the 13th day of the month of Adar.  So, why don't we celebrate it on February 13th and 14th?  Because on the Jewish calendar the month of Adar, spoken of in the bible, does not start until February, 15th.  If you count 13 days ahead, you come to February 28th.  And the holiday starts as the Jewish day does from 6 pm. one day to 6 pm the following day.

God sets the times for us to worship Him and special feast days during the year to turn towards him, put down the things that keep us busy and seek His wisdom and will for our lives.  Each month at the New Moon is one of these times.   Christians have lost touch with these special times because we do not study the Old Testament and realize that Jesus, or Yeshua,

"The DVD below is a wonderful personal testimony of a man I know personally who lives in the wilderness of Minnesota near the headwaters of the Mississippi River.  He is the real deal and a man whose word you can trust.   You can watch his whole video on line.  If you decide to purchase the DVD after watching it, I highly recommend it.   This is a man who wears the "easy yoke" of Christ through life's difficulties.
